"If we look around the country - look at the statistics, the clear indication is that most Americans are eating in a way that is having many adverse effects on their health,” states Walter Willett, MD, MPH, Dr.PH, Fredrick John Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition Chair, Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. “Health Coaches can help people understand what healthy food choices are and then help people put those into practice in a way that will have a huge impact on their long-term well-being.” Dr. Willett is a regular faculty lecturer at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the world’s largest nutrition school which trains Holistic Health Counselors / Coaches.

Holistic Health Counseling / Coaching is a fairly new field that is steadily growing around the globe. Holistic Health Counselors / Coaches play a vital role in the health care industry by providing positive support, motivation, health education and training to people to help them reverse old habits and conditioning and to help them make healthier nutrition and lifestyle choices. Health Counseling / Coaching is not intended to replace the care of a medical doctor but assists in helping people transition to healthy lifestyles in order to help them prevent or reverse disease and live long vibrant healthy and happy lives. Like personal trainers who offer instruction and support to help people remain accountable to regular exercise programs, Health Counselors / Coaches help people form better eating habits through regular educational training and support meetings. In addition to Dr. Willett, some notable health professionals who are helping train Holistic Health Counselors / Coaches at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and who are also publicly advocating for the field, are Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Neal Barnard, Marion Nestle PhD, AnneMarie Colbin PhD, Paul Pitchford MS, David Wolfe MS and many others.

Today more than ever, people are very confused about diet, nutrition and health. Often, people know that they need to make some health changes but they don't know how or where to begin. Many have tried every health and fitness craze to acquire the perfect body but they never achieve the results they set out to obtain. Their health further deteriorates because they have starved their body, relied on processed diet food products and synthetic supplements or hormones, instead of giving their body the care and nutrition that it needs to maintain optimal health functioning. In fact, most diet programs do not emphasize quality nourishment or disease prevention at all, and they often provide no emotional support or training which is very important in helping people to create lasting positive lifestyle behaviors and changes.

Unfortunately, many diet programs so often involve counting calories or restrictive methods, which can include foods or other agents that are known to cause disease, instead of helping someone truly learn healthy lifestyle methods that nourish their body with nutrient rich whole foods. Last year I met a slim woman who said, "I have been on Weight-Watchers all these years and I still got cancer." The success of a Weight-Watchers program depends on the calorie counting of foods, which is a restrictive method of dieting that is designed to address weight-loss only. For many people, counting calories is not sustainable, just like every other diet plan they have tried, and it does not protect them from diseases such as cancer because it is not based on nutrient rich whole foods that can prevent disease and stimulate natural weight-loss. This type of diet program also does not address food allergy issues which can cause fatigue and a host of other ailments that affect a person’s quality of life. Another woman, who became a client of Artemis in the City, had previously paid a lot of money for HCG injections. She lost 20 pounds on the HCG program but gained all of her weight back plus more after she stopped taking the injections. Like the calorie counting diets, the HCG diet method did not address any of her many health issues other than weight-loss which did not last nor did it address her eating habits. Additionally, it is common for people to exercise regularly and still not have any luck losing weight or improving their health. The main reason for this is because their food choices continue to be poor, which sabotages their ability to lose weight and causes many health issues such as high cholesterol and diabetes. Exercise does not negate the consumption of harmful foods. Most health professionals including personal trainers will agree that a large majority of a person’s ability to lose or maintain weight involves a person’s dietary choices and the quality of the food he/she is consuming. Implementing a whole foods based diet along with regular counseling / coaching has proven to be very effective in helping people to significantly improve their health, release long-held negative eating habits, and create lasting lifestyle change.

Just like financial advisors assist in helping a person plan for their future, Holistic Health Counselors / Coaches help people make positive lifestyle changes that can help them invest in a more vibrant and healthy future. Because without a healthy mind and body, it is very difficult for a person to have fun or live a quality life.

According to Dr. Willett, “Health Coaches can provide people with information that is critical but more than that they can give them a hand to help them put into practices choices that can have powerful influence on their health and well-being and the health and well-being of their families as well.” Hiring a Holistic Health Counselor / Coach can help make it easier and more fun for a person to implement healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes that are often very necessary in order to address serious life threatening health issues such diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Health Counselors / Coaches provide support, knowledge and training, as well as act as a role model by walking the talk. But just like medical professionals and other health professionals can have different specializations, levels of training and knowledge, so can Health Counselors / Coaches. It is important for people to find the right Health Counselor / Coach who has the professional experience and background that matches with their need. Health Counselors / Coaches can be found working as independent consultants as well as in partnership with health clubs, wellness centers, medical centers and spas.

“My wife and I recently did a 6 month program with Danielle and it has made a world of difference for each of us personally and for our family as a whole. Working with Danielle allowed my wife and I to meet our personal goals (weight loss, overall health, peace of mind, etc.). We met all the goals we began with. The biggest impact through Danielle’s program centered around knowing the truth about healthy living. Rather than look solely at calories of a product, Danielle taught my wife and I how to look past simple labels and understand where food comes from, how different foods impact our bodies, how the combinations of certain foods are critical, etc. It truly has changed the way we look at eating. The program has also helped with our children. Building these habits and applying them at a younger age I am convinced will help my kids grow healthier, be happier and live longer.

I highly recommend Danielle to anyone who desires to transform their life to healthy living."
